Number 9

Beirut was just ranked in the list of the Top 10 best cities to travel to in the world according to Travel+Leisure's annual "World's Best" awards. The list of award-winners is based on an annual survey of 23,000 readers who provided evaluations for nearly 500,000 destinations, hotels, airlines and other travel entities. Florence, Italy came as number 1, followed by Rome, Bangkok, Sydney, Chiang Mai (Thailand), Cape Town, Buenos Aires, New York, Beirut and San Francisco.
However, Beirut - which appeared in the Top 10 list for the first time - was ranked before the fighting broke out between Israel and Hezbollah. This survey is rather significant first of all due to the sample size and secondly due to the fact that it is ranked by readers rather than writers.
We might be off the list for now, but I assure you we will be back on it within 2 years at most .

First of all , my congratulations .
I hope that Beirut will come back to the list as soon as possible and clime further.

If we look by region ,

Beirut comes second and Jerusalem third in the Middle East and Africa.

Hope for the quick (at list interim) peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon.

well for sure we will be back within 2 years, but i think it s important that people COME BACK to beirut, all those who left for a forced vacation! i am coming back myself in 2 to 3 weeks, i have been away now for 3 weeks and i cant wait to be back, even if i might go back to the unknown somehow. but people out there COME BACK for real, it s very important, dont turn ur back on beirut now.

I just looked for flights - it's not for the faint hearted. Air France is 17 hours of flying and Lufthansa is 27. Not cheap, either - But it's $100 more to go to Tel Aviv. Of course, Tel Aviv offers ramps to get off the airplane rather than a parachute.

Maybe I'll take the "Ultimate Mission Tour" and sneak away from the group during the jeep ride through the Golan Heights. The food and hotel sound good and are cheap - excepting the required donation. I'll give 'em the $500 minimum.

We apparently are not allowed to fly directly to Damascus. But Alitalia and Lufthansa will take us to Tehran in 28 to 31 hours of flying time for about the same price.

interesting, hcb. Another option is that we can land in cyprus and then swim to the Leb coast.

That's a long swim, Doc. But it gives me an idea. Landing craft. Think of it - we could put together our own "Ultimate Mission" Tour. But instead of a jeep ride through the Golan Heights and watching the trial of a guilty Hamas terrorist, we demonstrate an invasion and the destruction of a building from the ships offshore. If Israel can put on the "Ultimate Mission" eight day, five star, all meals, transportation and lodging included tour for only $1800 plus a "donation" well - things are cheaper there than they are in Haifa or Tel Aviv, aren't they? Even if they aren't, eight days all inclusive with arrival by boat for $2,000 is a steal. At least I think so.
