Long Live the United Nations

This is a scan of The Times (27th July issue) on the killing of the 4 UN observers in Lebanon by a 'deliberate' Israeli attack on an observation post in south Lebanon. I know this is covered in every major newspaper around the world, but posting this on Beirut Live shows our sincere support to the United Nations and the important work it continously performs in Lebanon and around the world. Its a shame that the UN Security Council only expressed "shock" to the attack and didnt condemn it - a statment that was watered down because of US support to Israel. I have to thank Mortimer for sharing this article with us, which I think is one of the best I have seen.
Please click on the image to see a larger image of the scan and read the article.

We might never knwo why they were shelled. i believe that very little of the truth is reported in the media. it might be by mistake, it might be on purpose, or it might be something totally different. Someone from some secret service sending a message to someone else from some other secret service. And none are directly involved in this conflict.

I might be brainwashed by malko linge, largo winch and wag the dog, but if someone can imagine such stories for fiction, i wont be surprised if some genius is doing the same for real life scenarios.

This goes not only for the slaughter of these poor 4 peacekeepers, but also for most of the bombings happening in Leb. Starting with last year's mysterious string of late night mall explosions.

Hi there Tarek and all,

It seems that according to the Candian who was killed, Hizbullah was forming tghemselves around the UN post and have been firing rockets from very close to the UN post. the Candian officer who was klilled sent an email to his commander days before the incident fearing for his life as he knew he couldnt do anything as the bloody Hizbullah were using the UN post as human sheilds!

I have no doubt that they (hizbullah) are also using Lebanease civilians just to cause more hate when Israel succeeds in blowing them off.

1) the UN observers on these posts should and must either leave their post or fire back at Hizbullah.
2) Lebanease civilians should refuse submitting to Hizbullah.
3) Lebanease government should say fuck off to IRan and Syria and ask them politly to leave their country alone and fight their own battle from a different playground.

anonym #2 - let see... fox news?
did you now that aliens are manipulating Iran to take world domination? *g*
read some books...

as I said before:

both sides have been betrayed by their rulers.

israelian people have no peace because of the oppresive politic of their government against all neighbours.

palestinian people have no peace because some extemists use the people's despair to have power and lead them into more despair.

libanese people have no peace because some people use the despair of the refugees there to gain power also.

you've been all betrayed. and your ennemy is not accros the border but in your middle. sick people dreaming of grand israel, palestina or what else...

and you all will never have peace as long as this peolpe blinds you.

that's not only true for you, it is also for the US and everybody else.

Look at how Israel lashes out in Lebanon at all whom it considers enemes.. including the PFLP-GC, Lebanese army, the Lebanese people, and now this.

This can only be called one thing, pure terror! It want's to terrorise it's enemies here (along with the rest of the population), and it's as if Lebanese beaches are also its enemy. The oil slick is said to reach cyprus and Turkey even i read somewhere.. bye bye fragile ecosystem. BIG applause to pinpoint bombings.. tsk tsk

1134 GMT - Australian Prime Minister John Howard said July 27 he would support the deployment of a major international force to Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah. Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer warned from a security conference in Malaysia, however, that any such move without a cease-fire would be a "suicide mission." ...related announcement an hr earlier: Australia to withdraw its 12 peacekeeping troops from southern Lebanon (AP)

(27 July, Can. Natl Post) Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he seriously doubts Israeli forces deliberately targeted a UN post in south Lebanon, killing a Canadian and three other unarmed observers, and wants to know why the station was even being manned in the midst of what amounts to a war.

One of the observers who died was Canadian. Harper made the statement he did because he had additional information about Hezbollah activities around the base to whit they were using the base as shield. Hezbollah also shot and wounded another observer who was taken to an Israeli hospital for treatment.

UN reports (UNFIL) also note that these things happened around the base.

The link below will take you to an AU article which contains links to the relevant UNFIL reports.

UN soldiers were murdered yet again by Israel. AS civilians are continually murdered by Israel. Children... it jsut goes on and on. And they try to find excuses. All this shows is that Israel has no bounds - it must win, beat the enemy whatever the cost. animals.

(spiegel - http://www.spiegel.de/politik/ausland/0,1518,428927,00.html)

Short translation: Unifil reports every move arround their camps (it's her job), the Hisbollah have no interest to operate near her because israel would have the information within hours... Timur Goksel was 20 years adviser for the Unifil...

on a strategical point of view, Goksel makes the point. I easily believe this to be true.
this meens that I suspect israel to have commited a crime against UNO.

because crimes where commited before against Libanon.

My response to the silly anonymous who said:

here is what I say:

I am astounded that no one here has brought up one fact.

The question should is not WHY the UN was there.

The point is not whether the Hizbullah was using the UN as cover or not.

But the point IS that in the 6 hours proior to their deaths, the UN personnel has contacted the Israelis and warned that they take caution as they were firing too close to the post.

And the point is that the Israelis gave assurances time and again that they would not fire upon them.

So finally, the point is that the Israeli "word" was not honored.
The point is that the Israelis went back on their word, and despite their knowledge, MADE THE CHOICE to proceed.

There is so much that could have been done instead. They had such ample time to request that the UN personnel leave. The Canadian PM could have been made aware of the situation and requested that the UN personnel leave if he has such an issue with their presence there in the first place.

There was no imminent and immediate reason to bomb the post. Despite the Israeli cries of "our defence and right to exist", they always had the choice NOT TO DO IT, AND KEEP THEIR WORD.

The choice and the decision was made to keep firing in spite of their assurances.

This is the reason a cease-fire would fail. Israel would certainly break it. It has proven to be completely untrustworthy in such a circumstance.
