On August 12, at 7 am, Lebanese from throughout the country and international supporters who have come to Lebanon to express solidarity will gather in Martyr's Square in Beirut to form a civilian convoy to the south of Lebanon. Hundreds of Lebanese and international civilians will express their solidarity with the inhabitants of the heavily destroyed south who have been bravely withstanding the assault of the Israeli military. This campaign is endorsed by more than 200 Lebanese and international organizations. This growing coalition of national and international non-governmental organizations hereby launches a campaign of civil resistance for the purpose of challenging the cruel and ruthless use of massive military force by Israel, the regional superpower, upon the people of Lebanon.

August 12 marks the start of this Campaign of Resistance, declaring Lebanon an Open Country for Civil Resistance. August 12 also marks both the international day of protest against the Israeli aggression .

"In the face of Israel's systematic killing of our people, the indiscriminate bombing of our towns, the scorching of our villages, and the attempted destruction of our civil infrastructure, we say No! In the face of the forced expulsion of a quarter of our population from their homes throughout Lebanon, and the complicity of governments and international bodies, we re-affirm the acts of civil resistance that began from the first day of the Israeli assault, and we stress and add the urgent need to act!," said Rasha Salti, one of the organizers of this national event.

After August 12, the campaign will continue with a series of civil actions, leading to an August 19 civilian march to reclaim the South . "Working together, in solidarity, we will overcome the complacency, inaction, and complicity of the international community and we will deny Israel its goal of removing Lebanese from their land and destroying the fabric of our country," explained Samah Idriss, writer and co-organizer of this campaign.

"An international civilian presence in Lebanon is not only an act of solidarity with the Lebanese people in the face of unparalleled Israeli aggression, it is an act of moral courage to defy the will of those who would seek to alienate the West from the rest and create a new Middle East out of the rubble and blood of the region," said Huwaida Arraf, co-founder of the International Solidarity Movement and campaign co-organizer. "After having witnessed the wholesale destruction of villages by Israel's air force and navy and having visited the victims (so-called displaced) of Israel's policy of cleansing Lebanese civilians from their homes," continued Arraf, "it is imperative to go south and reach those who have stayed behind to resist by steadfastly remaining on their land."

I have to admit this blog is going one sided in the aspect of the articles now...all are anti-Israeli it seems.

You think Israel has nothing to fear? Iran funds Hezbollah and gives them weapons, Iran was present at North Koreas Missle launch, and many suspect they were shopping for nukes...

These are the freaks in the south of Lebanon, and Israel has good reason to deal with this NOW instead of later.

BTW you KNOW Iran is next for wartime...does anyone think a country who's government is sworn to wipe out another, and is trying desperately to go nuclear will be allowed? It's coming...

I hope this article makes up a little for the "one sided" nature of this blog you noted. I hope further you will try to understand the truth of what Mr Shalev says.

DER SPIEGEL 32/2006 - August 7, 2006

Interview with Israeli Author Meir Shalev

"We Went into Lebanon like Angry Bulls into the Arena"

Israeli author Meir Shalev discusses the war in Lebanon and the policies of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. He argues that Israel is incapable of destroying Hezbollah. Instead, the Israeli's should weaken the militia to the extent possible and implement a program of "pain management."

SPIEGEL: Mr. Shalev, is the Israeli Army fighting a just war?

Shalev: The cause of the war was a just one, but the conduct has not been. And by this I do not just mean the tragedy of Qana, but also what already happened in the first days: Attacking Beirut like this, killing civilians in Lebanon. From the very first day we should have limited ourselves to attacks against the Hezbollah strongholds along the Israeli-Lebanese border.

SPIEGEL: Why haven't limitations been placed on the scope of the attacks?

Shalev: You could feel a high level of testosterone, of hormones that shouldn't be there in such a situation. (Hezbollah leader) Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah drives everybody crazy in Israel. He sits there with this very calm voice. He is never angry, he doesn't curse, in a way he even looks gentle. For that, our political leaders and the military wanted to take revenge.

SPIEGEL: The Israeli government considers its behavior to be morally correct because they have, after all, forwarned the Lebanese population about the bombardments.

Shalev: Even if they warn the people, many people are not able to leave their towns, especially since roads, bridges, ports and the airport have been destroyed. But it is not only a question of morality. These Lebanese are going to be our neighbors forever, but many people are now against Israel. These citizens would support us if we had conducted our fight with the Hezbollah in a more measured way.

SPIEGEL: Many Israelis say: "The Arabs hate us anyway."

Shalev: Many Lebanese people were against the Hezbollah. It is a danger to the their whole country, especially in a city like Beirut which is very open and liberal. Because the fundamentalists one day will try to forbid this Western way of life. At the beginning of the war you could see from the declarations of various Lebanese leaders that even they were quite satisfied that Israel took care of the Hezbollah. But we went into Lebanon like angry bulls into the arena, attacking anything that moved.

SPIEGEL: Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told the members of the Knesset: "Save your criticism for the time after the war." But is it unpatriotic to voice criticism while Israeli soldiers are dying?

Shalev: Jewish history has been filled with very critical people. In fact, it was those who were against the consensus of their time who lengthened the history and the life expectancy of the Jewish people. Take Moses, for example. He took the slaves from Egypt into the desert almost against their will.

SPIEGEL: Don't you fear that criticism of this kind could help the enemy?

Shalev: In a true democracy, a leader with enough self-assurance does not talk the way Olmert does. One would, of course, be a traitor if he called Nasrallah and told him where our planes are getting ready to attack. But of course you can criticize the head of the government.

SPIEGEL: Olmert's speeches have been received very positively by the Israeli public.

Shalev: I don't like them. They are schmaltzy. It is this American way of schmaltz when you mention the first name of the victims and you show some kind of phony familiarity. I don't like this ritual of putting on your Kippa when you are reading a verse from the Bible. You either wear the Kippa the whole time or you read from the Bible without it. It is just ridiculous.

SPIEGEL: Do you think Israel can win the war?

Shalev: Olmert should have defined the objectives of the war from the beginning. But all he said was: "We will be victorious" without defining what victory means. Also with defense minister Amir Peretz we cannot win. He said, with great overestimation of his capacities: "Nasrallah will not forget the name Peretz." Olmert and Peretz behave like two bullies in a pub.

SPIEGEL: The announced goal is the destruction of the Hezbollah.

Shalev: What does this mean? Is it getting all of them to crawl on their hands and knees and hand over their weapons? We do not deal with a state which will surrender in an official ceremony. In medicine you have something called "pain management." You don't totally eliminate the pain. You try to manage it in a way so that patients can live with it. This is what we have to do with the Hezbollah. We have to weaken them, destroy their first lines. But militarily, it is not within Israel's ability to solve all of our problems. Our strength is the democratic character of our society which Nasrallah fully underestimates. We lost, when Olmert said, we will win. Despite that, we will win at the end, because the Israeli society is smarter than its political leaders.

RS---

It is very irresponsible to republish such a notice and encourage people to join. Untrained, basically unarmed civilians rushing to a war against a trained well equipped military will result in massive unneeded civilian deaths.

Also, it will not help fighting in the south, but more likely impede Hizbollah. Hizbollah has no luxury to train people at this time; it's only recourse will be to use the volunteers as cannon fodder.

As a historical reference, you may wish to study the "Children's Crusade of 1212"

This Blog, this Author is very one sided. I bet this is one way to get supplies to the terrorists. If you do march then you’re taking the chance of death. You hide these murders within your civilians. You protect them, making you all terrorist. So if more of you die, so be it. Being a Yank is great all this war is doing is thinning the number of crazies that will try to attack us. Hopefully Iran does something stupid and we can turn the Iraq defenders onto another front.

PS if you or your people mattered to the world our leaders wouldn't all be on vacation.

To be a leader, one must possess the following..

1 Integrity, 2 Respect, 3 Emphaty 4 Lack of Blame 5 Humility 6 Emotional Mastery 7 Responsibility 8 Accountability

A leader must be able to manage his/her emotion in a positive manner in any stiuation. We bring our emotion where ever we go, do not let your emotion contol over your head and decision. An angry man tend to make wrong decision.

Platinum rule

Treat others the way they want to be treated.

Resolving conflicts

Actually you should say, "Beirut death zone", and thank God "Israel Live".

The Koran is crap and hate, Muslims are worse than the Nazi's. Mohammed is a gun toting, terrorist producing want to be God. The Danish cartoons were so right on the money. Being a Christian, I can say this. In our Sunday School we were taught to love not kill, to work it out not fight. You were taught by your God and his disciples to fire a rocket and field strip an AK-47. Do I feel anger, yes I do. You people, you Muslims want the world to only exist in your terms. There will never be peace as long as the Muslims practice they’re faith. I don’t want to hurt anyone so I have come to the conclusion that I will never know world peace. Thank god I’m an American and we live in peace.

Go to the movies and watch the new Movie, “World Trade Center”. Know why Americans, British and the civilized world are against all of the Arabs, the Muslims. That wasn’t a military target that was a terror target, civilian target. Meant to hurt the states, all it did was make most Americans diss-like you more. I can’t wait for the GAS to not be needed so that we can watch that part of the world wither on the vine of life, then with no money you can’t buy bombs or rockets.

Sad to say

Currently, world leaders lead by monkeys, monsters, terrorist disguise as a good man. Supplied first class weapons to Israel to kill civilians, women & children. Disarm Hezbollah & removing Hezbolah is not the realistic solution. There are billions of muslims and non-muslims are witnessing the massacres done by IDF & assisted by US. Out of 41 suicide bombers, there are 9 muslims, the remainders are non muslims. They are not fighting because of a religious belief, but unlawful occupation of a nation. The root cause has to be addressed and handled properly and fairly.

Justifiable & realistic solutions are the answers.

it's exciting to see Lebanon, a country of war lords who barely created a national identity out of its 4 ethnic groups, showing this kind of unity and even the beginning of some law and order that'll be respected by all groups. from an evolutionary perspective this is a big growth, although it claimed a horrible price. it feels the same on this side, Israeli population that was so torn apart on the Palestinian question was re-united in this war making half of the country refugees and teaming up settlers in the same unit with the soldiers who took them out of their homes. it seems us humans can only unite against a mutual enemy. are we guys really at war or doing each other a huge favor? the things people have to bring on themselves in order to wake up....

although you're becoming more and more one sided, you're still my favorite Lebanese blogger and i respect the way you stand up to your truth. if you have the time i wanted to invite you to read my recent piece about Truth:

Here's an idea, Sam - let's see what you think of it. The United States and France and Germany have announced that they've looked back into history and forward into the future and now see only one solution to the problem. Israel has to be relocated and the place "Israel" used to be will be "Palestine." The borders will revert to those that existed on January 1, 1946. All Israeli Citizens will be moved to a territory currently being prepared just West and south of Miami, Florida beginning September 15, 2006. Temporary housing will be in FEMA trailers until permanent housing can be arranged. The United States 3rd Infantry Division has been alerted to assist in the relocation.

Look at the hate you express and your buddies spout above. Think how much hate you would feel if the 3rd Infantry Division came knocking on your door and told you to leave - a Palestinian family is moving into your home. Think how you would hate it if Russia suddenly said, "you're wrong, and you are dealing death and destruction only for the purpose of terrorizing an entire country" and started bombing Haifa or Tel Aviv. Think how you would hate it if the Iranian Mossad broke into your house one night and hauled your wife and children away as "terrorists." Would you say, "they should have known?" Would you say, "oh well, there's nothing I can do about it anyway." You don't think of those things only because you presently have the might to make you feel right. Thus, you don't have to worry about the "facts." You just have to keep yammering about how you are right, the Lebanese are sub-human garbage and anyone who disagrees is anti-israel - as if that means something important.

Sam, I can see that you know very little about Islam and Muslims or you'd never spout such nonsense. All religions have extremists, even Christians. Do not judge all Muslims by the actions of a few.

And if you were taught love in Sunday school, you must have forgotten it to so openly bash someone else's religion.

As a fellow American, I urge you to research subjects before you try to debate them.

8:13 PM

Okay so tell me, what is the stance of Islam to the infedels? What are you to do to them?

As to debating, I wake up under a beautiful flag. Sure some of our rules are nuts, and we have our fair share of wakco's too but our system works. We don't allow outsiders to bring in arms to kill the Mexicans or Canadians. We have a Mexican problem, you don't see us shooting rockets into they're country nor do the minute men.

No worries Scott, I bounce around many sites including some Israeli ones too. They can be one sided as well but they didn't start this. It started because Lebanon won't control they're people. So Israel is kicking some butt, so be. Give the two men back. If more Lebs didn't show him support for destroying they're country he would stop. It's your fault, all of the Lebs. Israel can't be blammed for the result.

Please forgive my ignorance on this matter. Here in america we are told that we are threatened by Islamic facists.( I don't know what that really even means). We are multi-cultural and seem to exist with many different religions without many problems. The Islamic mosque is right next door to the Catholic Cathedral, and the Jewish Temple is right down the street. I think Americans are afraid that Islam wants to force their beliefs on everyone and wants to destroy all else including the freedom to believe and live as one would choose for themselves. I am not saying this is the right perception. Most people here do not hate anyone, and genuinely want peace for everyone in the middle east. There are always some crazies in all places of course. What can anyone tell me about the Islamic view of having christians and jews living among them? Are they open to other faiths teaching and exposing their faith in open? FnC

sam, you're kind of missing the point. If Israel would get off its high horse, and if the U.S. would begin to act like a nation among nations rather than a nation over other nations, we might get a lasting peace. Then Hezbollah and Iran are far less likely to cause the destruction that they do.

I AM outraged over the terrorists. I am outraged by Hezbollah's actions, but don't even pretend that Israel is any better than Hezbollah in this case.

Protests and marches are worth little here in the U.S. anymore unless an absolutely absurd number show up...even the half million that gathered in Los Angeles over immigration reform caused little change and didn't even make the front page here in Ohio.

Trouble is that people protest everything. If someone is going to cut down a hundred year old tree, people show up with signs, if a family of squirrels is going to be removed to put in a water fountain, people protest...everything under the sun is protested to the point that when something big like wars are protested, it has lost all the impact of "holy crap, people are taking to the streets !!" because it is overdone to a silly level.

I don't support the Lebanese out of blind loyalty or hatred toward Israel, but because the whole nation is being victimized in this conflict.

People in the media are saying Lebanon had six years to resolve the Hezbollah situation. Did they really? If that's the case, why were the Syrians still there up until last year? People are blaming Lebanon for the U.N. resolution that has not been implemented. But how many U.N. resolutions has Israel brazenly ignored? Lebanon is a nation that for more than three decades has just not gotten a break... it's time to put this nation back together and let it prosper... a prosperous Lebanon will ultimately leave little room for Hezbollah as a military force.

Ah, but I rant... :-)

I am an American thanks, typical maybe but that's okay. Um they're called vactions, maybe you should try one. I didn't go to learn the secrets of the world. I went to see some sights, get away from work and party. See the bleeding hearts out there need a tissue. Here ya go, dry those eyes.

As for your accomplishments. You're rightI've never done a camel so I will stay in my bubble. One this side of the world we go to Mexico to see a woman take on a donkey. In your part of the world they go to Leb to see your women take on a camel. Proud Leb, thats funny but becoming rare, or is that your people?

Well thanks Rick, but being an idiot isn't determined by how I feel towards the bleeding heart people of the world. So call me whatever, I will always be me. I do agree with the other guy or gal on the Lebs and I don't live in a double wide. they don't allow them in Newport Beach Ca.

Sorry Rick, you are right. I have many American friends. Some came to visit me in Beirut, and some i visited in many parts of the states. But it's people like Sam who I pitty. All he listens to is what George Dubya Bush tells him and he believs him. That's what is so sad. He doesn't have a mind of his own. The media tells him what to do or say. He is programed.
Sam, you want to visit Egypt? That is where the camels are. Not in Lebanon. Get your facts straight before you make a fool out of yourself. People are laughing at you, not with you.
Again Rick, my appologies.

We have a lot of sheep here... mindless as you rightly point out, and if they leave the TV tuned to Fox News long enough, they actually begin to believe the stuff they hear.

And please don't tell him where the camels really are...they were much safer if he thought that they were in Lebanon! :-)

Can christians and Jews try to convert people in Muslim countries? Here in the U.S. we Jehovas Witnesses knocking on the door every Saturday morning (very annoying) but they have the freedom to express their religion. I was just wondering about freedom of religion in Muslim countries. I think Islam is probably a very beautiful religion, I just don't understand very much about it. By the way the FnC stands for Francisnclare not fox news. I am a secular Franciscan here in the U.S., and I am praying for the Lebanese people that are under attack right now. I am just trying to understand why all this is going on.

Sam, my "side" is a lasting peace in the Middle East. I oppose anything that stands in its way. Therefore, I oppose Hezbollah for its actions, and I oppose Iran. But to suggest that Israel is better than Hezbollah, or to suggest that this nation (U.S.) has not massively contributed to the misery in the Middle East is simply delusional, in my opinion.

That's the unemotional part of me speaking. Now for the emotional...

What angers me, Sam, are completely moronic and sophomoric comments based in racism because someone has nothing better to contribute. People that do so (again, in my opinion) are the type of people you see on "Cops" who are beating their wives. Since you actually own (or borrow) a computer and cared enough (for whatever reason) to come to this site, I had hoped for better of you. But you genuinely make me embarassed to say I am an American. These are people posting on this blog, Sam, not animals...try treating them like people.

Sam, it's all good...you post about Newport and vacations because you are on the defensive, but it was your aggression that put you there...just calm down man.

I came here doing the same thing, and I know we constantly see Middle East countries burn our flag and chant "death to America", ....I see it, we all do, but ...I'll try to calm you down if you do the same for me and others when we start posting with anger as I have done several times.

I even used the term "towelheads" in a previous post, but you and I both know this gets nobody anywhere. I do wonder if the people over there in the middle east know what it's like to be a normal everyday guy, go to work, and have nothing to do with anything, and you constantly see people wishing death upon you like you sent troops anywhere...."death to the capitalist pigs" and death to America" I have heard my whole life from the middle east etc....that's what we hear here constantly for years, and people seldom understand the frustrations we have....but know this, at this moment, I would much rather be hated than in a warzone, so you have to cut people slack in these times regardless of opinions because people are people, and face to face, things would be different...we could have a beer and talk about girls or something, but online...people take out their frustrations sometimes.

So put your embarassment on the shelf and leave it there. Also don't go see the World Trade Center movie, instead go rent a terroroist training video and watch that. See you don't embarass me, you make me stronger. Knowing that you have to have pussies to balance out the aggressors is a good thing. I am sitting and waiting, when the Lebanese people’s patience will be over. I am fallowing this conflict from the beginning and all I see is civilian death and destruction of properties. Of course like all the blogers in here I also wroth my opinion on this war which was about peace but now I think it is the time the people of Lebanon to weak up. The thing is that almost all Lebanese think that democracy is going to help them. Let me tell you this, if Israel was or is thinking that way they would not have the strongest army in ME and now wouldn’t destroy your homes and people. They call it self defense! I am wandering until when the Lebanon is going to play democracy? I am sure if they don’t defend themselves, the Lebanon would be one of the Israelis state soon. You must understand that crying did not and will not help you unless you have some powerful allies. Take a look on the history: all the genocides that happen the world was always in position of watching. I guess Israel got this! I decided not to write any more of this nonsense and I just want to say LEBANESE DEFEND YOUR SELF OTHER WISE NO ONE WOULD DO IT FOR YOU!

Jim - why don't you stop the nonsense and talk about something? All you do is continually rant about your image of what terrors are being experienced in Israel. Bombs filled with steel balls? What about guided bombs filled with other bombs filled with high explosive and encased in steel designed specifically to shatter into shrapnel to slice people into little pieces? What about white phosphorous designed to stick and burn to the bone? What about 500 kg bombs designed to destroy everything nearby and leave a hole with the soil so compressed it will never grow anything for a very long time? What about low flying very high speed jets constantly overhead simply to intimidate? What about drones buzzing around looking for targets?

What about idiots sitting in lala land watching reruns of Jesse Ventura either playing wrestler or playing governor. Interrupting his toke from time to time to spew another rant? You've gone out in the cold once or twice too often without a hat.

By the way - are you going to give us your highly educated, completely nonsensical take on "history - who started it?"

Do you not realize the Lebanese are suffering horribly because complete fools like you are turned loose with terrible weapons supplied by your country? Do you not realize it is with the encouragement of fools like you that Israel decides it can, with impunity, simply kill and maim and destroy without consideration of anything other than what happens to be pissing it off at the time? Read some of the Jewish writers on the subject if you REALLY are interested in the "truth" you say so often you are seeking.

You are simply a racist ranting fool who has no clue what he's talking about but wants very badly to be heard so he will feel he's got some meaning in this world. You don't.

Blogger HCB said...

I appreciate what you're saying. So, I'll explain why I said what I said: I wanted simply to show people how easy it really is to bait someone into blind anger. My belief is that both sides in this terror are motivated by the egos of their leaders - they say all the things that sound good to them but they really are ego driven. Thus, read the Shavlev interview regarding how it makes the Israel PM and defense minister crazy to hear their blood enemy speaking calmly - and they want "revenge." Hezbollah isn't driven by wanting a better situation for "their people" - they are driven by blind, unthinking hatred. Which breeds hatred. But we sit and talk and try to make sense of that and can't. So we say hateful things or we say platitudes. Mostly, though, it's thinly veiled anger and hatred on both sides with constant attempts to justify the anger and hatred rather than seeing just how easy it is to act out of hate. Imagine if I said what I said to the face of someone who had an AK-47 or a Merkava tank.

But - if you think censoring is a good idea, it's your blog and I'm simply a visitor. Without the power to do a single damned thing about anything.

2:40 PM
Blogger Rick said...

I don't know that censoring is an answer, but it's not my blog. When people spew ignorance, others do get an opportunity still to learn about other views. I am simply going to put jim in the same category as sam and no longer get baited. I came to this site to express my outrage over this war, and at both Hezbollah and the state of Israel, and to demonstrate my support of the inncoent Lebanese caught in the middle. If my posts have taken a strong pro-Lebanese and anti-Israeli slant, well maybe that's my response to the massive sympathy in this country for Israel coupled with a complete lack of empathy for the Lebanese people. It's time to stop using Lebanon as a battle ground for the region's conflicts.

RS, I don't think censoring is the answer, but it's only my opinion. I may not like what others have to say but I will defend to the death their right to say it. That's one of the founding principles of The US.
And I started commenting here mainly to show support and hope that the Lebanese people realize not all Americans are brainwashed by their media. I look forward to some meaningful and insightful discussions.

I wish so much that I could be there. As I sit in America, I wish so badly to help the Lebanese. Being from the southern states in the US, I remember Martin Luther King Jr. peace marches. They worked. You must press forward in civil stands. Know the light of God is within each of you to do this. Light will prevail over darkness. No, I am not religous but spiritual. It is time for spirituality to reign and bring all religions together. Those in Lebanon coming together in solidarity should also know Jews walking for goodness and humanity for the Palestinaians and Lebanese. Know so many people want this solidarity for you and the world and know you can do it. Take a stand together. I saw it in the 60's, it is POWERFUL POWERFUL. Think of God's bright light carrying you. We should all visualize God's bright light in the region. Thought, meditation, prayer is powerful stuff. Whatever your belief, think positive this Saturday. Much of my family in Lebanon has not heard of Saturdays march. I am not certain that the word is getting out or I know you would have much participation. Also gas shortage may prevent some as well. Best of luck, my heart is with you all the way.
